Chapter 4 of your text discusses Health and Fitness Program requirements. Address the following points (be sure to utilize the grading rubric to determine what is required to maximize the points awarded for your efforts):
Explain how the basic components of a health and fitness program can be used to benefit individual firefighters and fire departments.
Discuss metabolic syndrome and how it manifests itself in the members of the fire service. Then, describe steps that can be taken by a firefighter to avoid these risk factors.
Detail how the fire service of today arrived at the “standard” physical testing that is in place today for both structural firefighting, and wildland firefighting. Describe the tests, and why it is that they are considered “valid” by today’s hiring standards.
Develop a sample departmental policy for a health and wellness program for a career fire department with three shifts of firefighters that work a 24/28 hour schedule. The policy should be in the form of a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), General Order, or Collective Bargaining Agreement Language (CBA).

Answer the following questions:
#1. Describe how the firefighter died. The circumstance that lead up to the death and why the death was ruled as Line of Duty.
#2. Discuss what could have been done by the firefighter to prevent the death from occurring.
#3. Summarize the findings of the report, and the recommendations made by NIOSH for the department to prevent future, similar events.
#4. Provide statistics for how many firefighters died of the same cause (same category) in the year of the firefighter fatality in question.
