Final paper assignment:
Select one theory from this list: https://www.communicationtheory.org/list-of-theories/Links to an external site..  Select a theory that focuses on communication studies, not mass communication (hint: if you’ve had a class in it, like organizational or health communication, it’s a fine topic).  Use the library and find ONE primary, seminal work that summarizes the theory.  This should be the work (usually a book or article) that lays out the theory and is widely cited.  Find TWO additional scholarly research articles that test, explore, elaborate, or draw on the theory.
In section 1, summarize the theory in 5-8 pages.  Make sure you clearly identify what questions the theory is trying to answer.  For example, the Elaboration Likelihood Model is trying to answer the question: “What creates more lasting opinion change, central or peripheral cues.”
In section 2, summarize the two additional articles that you find in 5-8 pages.  What elements of the theory did they test or explore?  How did they refine, confirm, or challenge the theory?
In section 3, offer your conclusions in 3-5 pages.  What, in your opinion, does the theory successfully address?  What is the next step that researchers should take. Compare the theory to what you read about in Chapter 35.  Is the theory moving the directions that Stacks and Salwen recommend or not?  Is that a limit of the theory or not that big a deal?  Finally, in a single substantive sentence, state what you think the theory illuminates about communication.  For ELM it might be: “The ELM research shows that persuasion through central cues produces lasting attitude change, while persuasion through peripheral cues produces short-term attitude change.”
