Module 2 Assignment:
Essay 2: The Great Louisiana Slave Revolt, 1811
Context
Historians use primary sources to determine the causes and consequences of the events they study. Some events have fewer primary sources than others, and historians have to piece together events as best as they can to recreate the event. Historians understand that few events have a single cause or a single consequence and that incidents tend to have both short- and long-term causes and consequences. As you watch the video and read the primary and secondary sources for this assignment, think about both the foreign and domestic causes of the revolt as well as the consequences.
Instructions
The Great Louisiana Slave revolt was the largest slave revolt in US history, yet it barely gets a mention in textbooks, if it is mentioned at all. In this essay, use all the sources provided for it to analyze the causes and consequences of the revolt. Include at least 2 references from each of the sources provided. What were the long term and short-term causes of the revolt? What were the long term and short term consequences of the revolt? What is the significance of the Great Louisiana Slave revolt? Should we include this revolt in the history textbooks? Why or why not? [NOTE: it’s not sufficient to say this story should or shouldn’t be in the textbooks. You must offer evidence to support your conclusion.]
