The purpose of this essay is for you to find out more about a curiosity that has come up in your reading of Augustine’s Confessions, or in some other cultural, artistic, or religious accomplishment of the early Christians. It may focus on some particular church from the period or on an early development in Christianity, for example.
How to approach the assignment?. First, why do you want to find out more about this particular thing? Second, upon investigation, what did you find out? How would you characterize the main thing you learned? What did you find particularly interesting? And which sources did you consult? And third, what difference did your investigation make in some larger context–your understanding of history? of art? of religion and/or Christianity? of your own values?
One simple way to consider writing the essay is to address the first question in your introduction (1 paragraph); the second questions in the body of your essay (2-3 paragraphs); and the third questions in your concluding section (2-3 paragraphs). Feel free to write from a 1st-person point of view (i.e. “I”). But however you do it, make it your own and offer a genuine, close examination of the art.
