Writer can create their
own scenario of a patient who wants to taper off their benzodiazepines that
they have been taking for at least 10 years or more to include:
·
the age and gender of
the patient
·
list all medical and
psychiatric diagnoses (i.e. is there a seizure history? anxiety disorder? etc.)
·
current medications and
allergies
·
specifically include the
benzodiazepine, the dosing instructions and how long they have been taking it
(must be for at least several years), the MOA, pharmacodynamics, and
pharmacokinetics.
·
(Patient example: The
patient is a 68-year-old Caucasian male taking Xanax 1mg, one tab by mouth four
times daily for 20 years and wants to be taken off this medication)
How would you approach
tapering them off their benzodiazepines in an outpatient setting?
·
Write the instructions
on how you would taper them.
·
List the potential
withdrawal symptoms they could potentially have and how you would approach this.
·
Would you use any other
medications to help with the withdrawal symptoms (list what you would use, how
you would use them, and why) or therapy (what kind, why)
·
How often would you
follow up with the patient?
·
Cite at minimum one
journal article that provides recommendations for taper and supportive
medications, and rate and grade the article using John Hopkins
Support your answers
with the evidence, also use DSM diagnosis and APA format.
